{"id":215,"date":"2014-04-01T13:14:51","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T17:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/i103906main.wpengine.com\/?p=215"},"modified":"2025-05-27T09:14:28","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T13:14:28","slug":"what-is-stained-glass-preservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stainedglassbyshenandoah.com\/?p=215","title":{"rendered":"What is Stained Glass Preservation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">I have been reminded that some of the terms we throw around in the business may not mean much to the average person.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">So allow me to clarify the studio terminology a bit:<\/span><\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Preservation<strong> <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">encompasses the combined efforts and techniques\u00a0of maintaining\u00a0and protecting the integrity of stained glass. The approaches to preservation can be both conservative and restorative in nature. Much of this depends on the age, value, and historical nature of the window.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">Among the techniques are <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>repairs<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">(where minor and unobtrusive),<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>conservation <\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">(techniques saving as much original material as possible), <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"The Restoration Process\" href=\"http:\/\/i103906main.wpengine.com\/ourservices\/the-restoration-process\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900; text-decoration: underline;\">restoration<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span>(reconstruction, partial or whole, of the stained glass using new lead and sometimes new glass and painted work to return a window to <\/span><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">a &#8220;like new&#8221; condition), and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em><strong><a title=\"Protective Glazing\" href=\"http:\/\/i103906main.wpengine.com\/ourservices\/protective-glazing\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900; text-decoration: underline;\">protective glazing<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">(<\/span><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">additional components added to the exterior of the stained glass in various forms).<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">As in all artistic trades, there are (sometimes widely) varying opinions as to the merits of each preservation technique, and certainly no broad application instantly recommended for a particular window or church. After all, every edifice containing stained glass has a history, and most preservation efforts, in our experience, are driven by multiple factors.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">In other words, every window is built with a purpose, but not all windows are built with the same levels of materials, craftsmanship, design intricacy, and artistry&#8211; and thus the drive to preserve them should be based on all of those things.<\/span><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been reminded that some of the terms we throw around in the business may not mean much to the average person.
